FORTON POND

House Field Pond, otherwise known as ‘The Pit’, has been used informally by the village community in Forton for many years. Recently, as a result of a splendid initiative by our former Pond Warden, Chris Woodruff, the site was imaginatively transformed between 1998 & 2000 to become a fine amenity for the village.  We are grateful for a series of funding packages and the generous assistance of the landowner, Mr Croskell, and other adjacent landowners.

Forton Parish Council co-ordinated the project which has seen funding/support from the Environment Agency, Lancashire County Council, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, Wyre Countryside Services and Myerscough College alongside willing helpers from the village.

Improved access through new footpaths and a boardwalk, fencing, hedge, wildflower & aquatic vegetation planting, tree surgery and an interpretation sign have enhanced the pond. A beautifully carved seat was installed beneath the trees in 2001.

The Pit is publicly accessible and can be found on School Lane about 100 yards east of the cricket ground. There is direct access to the village school for educational activities.

And for lovers of ponds, there is another fine example at Cleveley Mill
